The Artist, The Collection, The Foundation
Established in 2019 in Detroit, Michigan, the Modern Ancient Brown Foundation (MABF) supports creative practitioners who are interdisciplinary or anti-disciplinary in their making. Drawing upon the personal experiences of its founder, painter McArthur Binion– who has practiced across visual and literary arts–MABF celebrates artists working at the intersection of critical studies, creative writing, and visual culture. The Foundation aims to be supplemental to academic space and higher learning, where scholars may expand and experiment beyond their research, and writers and artists may engage in deeper critical analysis around their making.
McArthur Binion (b. 1946) has maintained an engaging and historic artistic practice that spans over forty years.
The Fellowship
The fellowship is designed for emerging scholars with rigorous research practices who may also have an interest in creative disciplines such as poetry, music, visual art, and performance. The fellowship is a space for scholars to rest, write, and explore ways in which their scholarship may expand across genre and form.
The Residency
The residency is a studio space offering that encourages various forms of making. The program provides a monthly stipend throughout the 3-4 month residency, shared studio space between two fellows, and studio equipment. Facilitated during the residency term are two critique sessions with esteemed artists and educators in the Detroit arts community. The Residency supports studio practitioners and artists seeking to develop their work in dialogue with Critical Studies.
MABF is committed to fostering a culture that supports the work of historically marginalized groups, empowering artists to tell their own stories and share their gifts with the world.
